AT&T Center
is a multi purpose arena located in San Antonio, Texas. It is home to the San Antonio Spurs of the NBA, the San Antonio Rampage of the AHL, and the San Antonio Silver Stars of the WNBA. It is also home to the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo every February, as well as the Xtreme Bulls tour event (generally held at around the same time as the Stock Show). The arena also hosts many major concert tours, the WWE, MMA, and Ice and Childrens shows.
Prior to moving into the AT&T Center, the Spurs played at the Alamodome, a primarily a domed football stadium that was configured to allow half of the open floor space to be used for basketball. Even though the Alamodome was still fairly new (it opened in 1993), it became obvious over the first few years that the Spurs were using it more than expected, which made it difficult to schedule multiple dates for conventions or a regular-season football schedule.
The Alamodome’s seating capacity could be expanded to over 30,000 for regular season games, and drew 40,000 fans for a 1999 NBA Finals game. Unfortunately, the Spurs and their fan base grew very unhappy with the Alamodome because of its extremely poor sight lines and feeling of being inside a cavern when it was setup for basketball.
For several years, the Spurs tried to get the city to build a new arena, which eventually happened when the Spurs and the City agreed to build a new arena next to the dome. However, at the last minute, the Spurs agreed to a deal with Bexar County to build the new arena next to the Freeman Coliseum. As a part of the agreement with the county, the new arena would be home to the Spurs, a new hockey team, and the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo Association’s annual, multi-day Show and Rodeo – this would require the Spurs to make an extended road trip every February.
